Description
Applications are invited for the position of Candidate Clinical Nurse Specialist / Clinical Nurse Specialist - Neuroendocrine Tumours (NET Tumour), within St. Vincent's University Hospital.
Purpose of the post
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) plays a pivotal role within the National Centre for Neuroendocrine Tumours, based at St. Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH). Designated as the national referral Centre for NETs by the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), this centre provides expert, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex and rare cancers, including gastrointestinal, pulmonary, adrenal and paraganglionic neuroendocrine tumours.
The CNS is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care across all stages of the patient pathway – from initial referral and diagnosis through treatment, follow-up, and survivorship. A key aspect of the role is providing clinical leadership and nursing expertise for the implementation and delivery of Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT), a novel and highly specialised treatment for advanced NETs now available in Ireland through SVUH. This development marks a significant milestone in the national cancer strategy, eliminating the need for patients to travel abroad and allowing them to receive advanced therapies closer to home.
The post holder will act as a consistent point of contact and advocate for patients and their families, providing expert nursing assessment, symptom management, education, and emotional support. They will ensure seamless coordination of care between hospital departments, other institutions, community care, and international collaborators. The CNS will contribute to and participate in fortnightly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, outpatient clinics, clinical research, service development and quality improvement initiatives to meet the evolving needs of NET patients across Ireland.
The successful candidate will also work closely with consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to facilitate national leadership in the care of NETs, participate in international networks, and contribute to educational efforts across the Irish health system. This includes supporting staff education, delivering Clinical Nurse Specialist - Neuroendocrine Tumours3 training in the use of novel therapeutics, and guiding best practice in the rapidly developing field of neuroendocrine oncology.
This is a highly rewarding and dynamic role, suited to an experienced, motivated, and compassionate nurse who is passionate about advancing specialist care in a complex and growing field of cancer medicine.
