Applications are invited for the Permanent position of Senior Psychologist - Cystic Fibrosis in St. Vincent’s University Hospital.
 
Overview: This is a specific post, prioritized by St Vincent’s University Hospital, the National Clinical Programme for Cystic Fibrosis, the Department of Psychology and the HSE. The post is dedicated to the care of adults with Cystic Fibrosis. The successful candidate will provide a professional Psychology service to the patients attending the National Referral Centre for Adult Cystic Fibrosis at St Vincent’s University Hospital.
 
The holder of this post will work with the other Cystic Fibrosis Psychologists & with the Cystic Fibrosis Multidisciplinary team to provide an effective Psychology service to People with Cystic Fibrosis. Treatment is provided on a one to one basis in out-patient clinics, the Cystic Fibrosis Day Care Unit and on in-patient wards. Continuous professional development, peer education, research, audit and service enhancement through performance management are key components of the position. Strong interdisciplinary links exist between all members of the Cystic Fibrosis team, assuring a high level of care for the patient and promoting great job satisfaction.
 
The Cystic Fibrosis Centre cares for 430 individuals, aged 16-70 years. This number grows annually through the transition programme when care is transferred from the paediatric setting to the adult services.
 
Good mental health is the cornerstone of maintaining long-term health and quality of life when living with cystic fibrosis. Managing the illness can be physically and emotionally challenging for the person living with the disease, their family and supporters. Counselling and therapeutic interventions play an important role in the delivery of care to this population, especially in areas of coping, adherence to treatment and treatment burden. The successful candidate, through the use of therapeutic intervention strategies will work with clients who are experiencing the psychological burden of living with cystic fibrosis especially in the areas of guilt, shame, grief, anxiety and depression. They will work directly with People with Cystic Fibrosis offering therapeutic interventions for a range of mental health difficulties, emotional struggles, life skills training, identity issues as well as working on self enhancement, self-understanding and behaviour change.
