Applications are invited for the position of Senior Medical Social Worker - Nephrology in the Medical Social Work Department of St. Vincent’s University Hospital.
Overview: The senior medical social worker in nephrology is responsible for the provision of emotional and practical support to patients within the nephrology service in St Vincent’s University Hospital. To provide a professional social work service to the patients referred to the social work department of St. Vincent’s University Hospital. To disseminate best practice guidelines and to actively participate in the management of the social work department as agreed with the head of department. To continually develop and maintain high standards of Social Work Practice within the Social Work Team.
The senior medical social worker in nephrology is a support person for patients both before and after they start dialysis and to renal transplant recipients, as appropriate. Social workers are highly educated and trained to help patients and their families by providing support in all areas of their lives including: emotional, financial, career, lifestyle adjustment and more.
Nephrology social work services support and maximize the psychosocial functioning and adjustment of chronic kidney disease patients and their families. These services are provided to improve social and emotional stresses resulting from the interacting physical, social, and psychological concomitants of chronic kidney disease which include shortened life expectancy, altered lifestyle with changes in social, financial, vocational, and sexual functioning, and the demands of a rigorous, time-consuming, and complex treatment regimen. The nephrology social worker is a part of an interdisciplinary team and provides collaboration with other team members to help them in understanding the biopsychosocial factors that can impact treatment outcome.
